New Berger Classic Bullets

For the first time in Berger’s history we’ve purposefully designed Hybrid shaped hunting bullets that comply with the restrictive dimensional standards set by SAAMI. We did this so that hunters can shoot ammo loaded with Berger Hunting bullets in their factory rifles while feeding through a magazine.

Some might say, “What’s the big deal?” Well, frankly, SAAMI standard dimensions significantly limit the length of the nose (negatively affecting external ballistics performance) in two ways. First, the length from the end of the neck to the tip of the bullet of SAAMI standard ammo is typically so short that to make an ogive that will allow bearing surface to be forward of the neck it must be blunt and therefore have a low BC.

The other way SAAMI limits nose length is by calling for typically longer throats than is optimal. When you have a long throat, the nose can’t be too long or the jump to the rifling is considerable. This is typically bad for precision and accuracy. So what you end up with is stubby nose bullets with low BC and poor external ballistics performance.

We were not successful in our quest to have SAAMI standards modified to improve performance so we are forced to optimize our bullet designs to conform to these dimensions while making them as high performance as is possible under the circumstances. To this end, Bryan Litz designed Hybrid hunting bullets with noses short enough to conform to SAAMI dimensional standards. The good news is these bullets have two key characteristics that will make them popular among those who hunt with factory rifles and feed their ammo through a magazine.

The first is that the nose design is a Hybrid. This design combines the best aspects of two different shapes. As you move forward along the bearing surface a tangent curve starts the ogive. Tangent ogives are known to be less sensitive to seating depth. As you continue forward on the nose the tangent curve transitions into a secant curve. Secant ogives are known to be more efficient in the wind (VLD bullets are pure secant ogives).

When you combine these two shapes you get the best of both worlds (less sensitivity to seating depth differences and improved external ballistics performance). Since these new Berger Classic Hunter bullets must have a nose length that is short enough to comply with SAAMI standards we get the most external ballistics performance possible by making the nose with Bryan’s Hybrid design.

The second key characteristic is how Berger hunting bullets perform on impact with game. Our bullets are unique in that they penetrate through the first 2” to 5” of tissue and bone. Once inside the vital organs area, our bullets start to expand and while it continues through the vitals it will shed anywhere from 40% to 90% of its weight as fragments.

When you combine these fragments traveling in all directions away from the primary wound channel with the energy created from this action turning into hydrostatic shock you end up with massive tissue destruction deep inside the animal vital organs. The result is either the animal will drop in its tracks from the tremendous shock or it won’t go far. This much internal damage leads to rapid loss of blood pressure or organ failure which puts the animal down fast.

We know that this is how this bullet design works because we tested it not only in media but also on game. Next week we will post another blog article which tells you about how I took these bullets with me to New Zealand to test them on several animals of various sizes and at various ranges. I know from firsthand experience that hunters who try this bullet in the field will be happy that they did.

“Accuracy and Precision for Long Range Shooting” by Bryan Litz

Bryan Litz, Berger Bullets’ Chief Ballistician, is proud to announce his latest offering to the long range shooting community. In his second book, Bryan helps shooters understand some of the theories behind practical shooting and discusses techniques to improve hit percentages. 1. Precision – How group size affects hit percentage. Topics include muzzle velocity variations, wind and range estimation errors and inherent rifle precision.

2. Accuracy – How well the group is centered around the aim-point. Topics include leveling your sights, trajectory modeling and secondary effects, calibrating ballistic solutions, and live fire verification.

3. Weapon Employment Zone (WEZ) Analysis – This section shows how to measure a weapon’s effectiveness throughout its range of employment. Topics include score shooting, varmint and big game hunting, military and tactical shooting and includes a comparison between the .300 Win Mag and .338 Lapua Mag.

Bullets to be discontinued

As the election season draws to a close, we are already hearing about increased orders on both firearms and components. In preparation for the coming months, we are discontinuing several of our slow moving bullets. This will give us more room for quicker production on faster moving bullets and new releases, ensuring that you receive your bullets as quickly as possible. Also, this will give us the ability to move forward on several new bullet designs that will give you better options for your desired application.

All existing orders for these bullets will be filled. Any additional orders must be placed by Nov 16, 2012. These bullets will no longer be available after Nov 16th.

Welcome To The New Berger Bullets Website!

As you can tell, over the last several weeks we have been working diligently on improving our website to make it more visually appealing and easier to use for both consumers and dealers. We have been making changes to both www.BergerBullets.com and our store website www.BuyBergerBullets.com, and over the next few weeks we will be introducing you to several of the upgrades and changes we have made through our blog.

The first big change that you are more than likely to notice if you have browsed around our website is our new Dealer Map. It is an innovative application that helps consumers find dealer locations, and we have been getting lots of positive feedback on how well it works.

When you click on the “Find a Dealer Near You” button on the top guide bar, it will bring you to a page that shows a map of the USA. If you are in the USA, you do not have to select your country. In the box above the map you can search by your full address, country, state, city, or even just by putting in your zip code. Next, select the radius you would like to search within and click Find Locations. A green arrow will appear indicating the location you selected, then several red pushpins will appear in the map to identify where nearby dealers can be located. See Image Below:

The Berger Bullets Ballistics Calculator is back!

One of the biggest projects we have undertaken with our new website is a complete update of our ballistics calculator. After several weeks of testing, we are proud to announce that our new ballistics calculator is ready to use!

You can find the Ballistics Calculator here.

On the top of our webpage you will notice a link that says ballistics, with a drop down to our twist rate calculator and our ballistics calculator. When navigating to the ballistics calculator, the first element you will see is the bullet library. It is a convenient tool that will automatically fill the bullet properties fields with the correct information when you select a bullet from the list.

Below, you will see the bullet properties fields are filled in with the 30 Cal 175 Grain  VLD Berger Target Bullet information. You would then manually change the Gun Properties, Environment, Target, and the rest of the fields to correspond with the conditions you will be shooting under. Finally, you can click Calculate Range Card to get the trajectory information you have been waiting for.

We are proud to announce that the 5th annual Southwest Nationals will be held February 4-9, 2014 at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix, Arizona.  We will be sending programs to shooters on our mailing list soon, in the meantime you can download the Match Program here to sign up.

The SWN has become one of the premier Long Range matches in the US.  We had 258 competitors last year from 5 different countries, and expect more this year.  Visit our new SWN page and watch our introduction video for more information.

Here are a few of the match highlights:

  • We offer six full days of shooting.  The Grand Agg runs from Fri-Sun to include as many people as possible.  The other days consist of a shooting clinic, midrange match and two team matches.  Take a look at our schedule of events to better plan your trip!
  • We run three completely separate events, with equal awards given to Sling (TR), F-Open and F-TR divisions.
  • Shot Challenge Match – We randomly select three individual shots from each stage of fire to create an aggregate.  The winners of this aggregate in the Sling, F-Open and F-TR divisions will each receive a free entry to the 2015 SWN.  Anyone to shoot a perfect score of 210-21x’s will receive 50 boxes of Berger Bullets. There is no additional entry fee for this match; all competitors are automatically entered.
  • Berger will award $3,500 to the top winners in the Grand Agg (in addition to the bullet awards and other prize money).
  • There will be over 30,000 Berger Bullets given in awards, plus other donated prizes.

One-Of-A-Kind AR-15 Type Carbine To Use Berger Bullets

Wyoming Governor Matt Mead takes aim with his new rifle.

Wyoming Arms LLC, manufacturer of the highly accurate and reliable WY-15, has announced the commission by Wyoming Governor Matt Mead to produce a special AR-15 type carbine for his personal collection.

The Governor’s carbine will be based on the WY-15 with custom engraving including the Great Seal of Wyoming and his signature. With the billet upper and lower receivers anodized in Type III Matte Sand and the black furniture, not only will the finished firearm have a striking appearance but will also be suitable for use in the harsh environment of the Wyoming outdoors. As a lifelong hunter and shooter, Governor Mead insisted that this firearm be much more than just a simple show piece.

At the heart of the WY-15 is the Patent Pending WYO LOK barrel and titanium barrel nut. The WYO LOK system ensures the WY-15’s phenomenal accuracy and reliability. For the primary sighting system, Governor Mead choose a custom Leupold VX-III 4.5-14 with the JB windage reticle and custom DCT (Drop Compensating Turret). Bruce Pettet, President and CEO of Leupold & Stevens was pleased and stated; “On behalf of our 650 American employees, we would like to thank Wyoming Arms and Governor Mead for choosing Leupold.”

A selection of the ultra reliable Magpul Gen 3 PMAGs, including 10, 20, 30, and 40 round capacities will feed the Governor’s new carbine. Magpul Industries also provided 5 of the limited edition Wyoming 30rnd PMAGs. These PMAGs feature the Wyoming Bucking Horse molded into the body to commemorate the company relocating manufacturing, distributing and shipping operations to Cheyenne Wyoming.

“We at Magpul are pleased that Wyoming Governor Matt Mead chose the PMAGS to feed his new Wyoming Arms carbine, along with the MOE Riflestock, MOE + Grip, MBUS PRO sights, and the new MS1 sling system,” said Duane Liptak, Jr. Director of Product Management and Marketing for Magpul Industries. The fire control group will be the renowned Geissle Automatics LLC Hi-Speed Super Match and the Geissle Automatics LLC Mk I SMR will be the hand guard.

While the Wyoming Arms LLC WY-15 chambered in 5.56 WYO will handle all in spec .223 Remington and 5.56 NATO rounds, Governor Mead will also be supplied with handcrafted ammunition loaded with the Berger 70gr VLD (Very Low Drag) bullet. Executive VP for Berger Bullets, Eric Stecker made the following statement; “It is an honor to know that the Governor’s WY-15 will be shooting the Berger 70gr VLD bullet. This bullet will allow Governor Mead to get all the accuracy and precision Wyoming Arms LLC has built into his rifle while still feeding from the magazine.”

2015 SWN – New Building and Range Dedication

The 2015 Southwest Nationals is quickly approaching! We expect to hit our capacity of 270 shooters, and are excited to welcome shooters from Canada, Ireland and the United Kingdom, as well as all across the United States.

We are also thrilled to announce a new building and second parking lot at the 1000 yard range! Berger Bullets and Nightforce Optics have teamed up with Arizona Game and Fish to make these new additions possible. We will also honor Middleton “Mid” Tompkins by dedicating the 1000 yard range to him.

mid-tomkinsMid Tompkins is a legend in the highpower shooting community. In his 65 years of shooting (to date), he has won countless National and World titles, including 6-time National Highpower Champion and World F-Class Open Champion. He shot on the Air Force Rifle Team and assisted in the development of the M16 rifle. He has also represented his country in over 20 US Palma and
F-Class teams. More importantly, he has freely given his time in running matches and serving on various shooting committees. Very few people realize how much time and effort is required to serve shooters in this way, and fewer still are willing to actually do so. Mid has dedicated his life to the growth and support of the shooting sports, and we are grateful for the opportunity to honor him in such a fitting way.

“There are a few special people fueled with passion who impact the shooting sports; Mid Tompkins is one of those people. Mid is entirely deserving of this recognition,” says Eric Stecker, President of Berger Bullets.

The dedication ceremony will be held at the 1000 yard line at Ben Avery Shooting Facility on Saturday, Feb. 14th, at 8:15am.

Introducing the New 6.5mm 130gr AR Hybrid OTM Tactical Bullet!

26915We are thrilled to announce that our recent tests were successful and our new 6.5mm 130gr AR Hybrid OTM Tactical bullet will soon be released to the public.

For the past few years the Berger Bullets team has had to put all new product projects on hold due to overwhelming demand for our existing product lines exceeding our production capacity. The 6.5mm 130gr Match AR Hybrid OTM Tactical bullet was one such project. Tooling was made for this new design just before the industry surge took place in late 2012.

Finally, thanks to new machinery coming online and the industry surge beginning to calm down, we are able to release designs that have been in the works for several years now. This is the first of many new designs that will be introduced in the coming years.

Our Chief Ballistician, Bryan Litz, has written the following article detailing the thought process behind the design of this brand new bullet.

Behind the Design

Intelligent bullet design and selection begins with an understanding of application constraints. For bullets that will be used in unlimited rifles, there are few constraints and performance can truly be maximized. However, many shooting applications have realistic constraints such as magazine feeding of loaded rounds. In constrained applications, you need to ask the question: “What’s the best bullet that will work within the constraints of my shooting application?”

The new Berger 6.5mm 130 grain AR Hybrid OTM Tactical bullet is specifically optimized for maximum performance in magazine length ammo.

6.5mm cartridges are the second most common cartridges used by top shooters in many of the Precision Rifle Series (PRS) matches, with 6mm being the most common. These kinds of tactical matches all have stages that require repeating rifles either AR-10 platforms or bolt guns, so magazine feeding is a must. Recognizing that Berger did not have an option that was truly optimized for this particular application, we went to work and the latest 6.5mm Hybrid is the result.

What makes this bullet optimal for magazine length ammo? To start with, the nose of the bullet is constrained in length so that when it’s loaded to mag length in 6.5mm cartridges such as the 6.5mm Creedmoor, 260 Remington and 6.5×47 Lapua, the nose of the bullet won’t be pushed below the case mouth. This can be an issue with some of the heavier 6.5mm bullets like the 140’s. Furthermore, the hybrid ogive design is not sensitive to jump distance like some other designs such as the VLD.

Another consideration of length constrained ammo is how much of the bullet is pushed down into the case. The inside of the case is for powder, and the more space you take up with bullet, the less powder you can fit in. Less powder means less total energy available, and muzzle velocity is depressed. A bullet weight of 130 grains is an optimal balance between external ballistic performance (BC) and internal case capacity considerations which translate into muzzle velocity. Further to this objective, the AR Hybrid has a minimal air gap in the front of the nose, which allows the bullet to have an even shorter OAL. When dealing with length constrained designs, you need to pack as much bullet into as little length as possible to optimize overall performance. Another advantage of making the bullet shorter is that stability, including transonic stability is improved.

Although this design is length constrained, the combination of a hybrid ogive and 7 degree Boat Tail produce a very respectable G7 form factor of 0.920 which is within 1% of the popular 6mm 105 grain Hybrid. See below for full live fire ballistic performance data.

The 6.5mm 130 grain AR Hybrid will be barely stable from a 1:9” twist, and reaches full stability from a 1:8” twist which is common for many 6.5mm rifles. Cartridge Selection for Magazine Length Constraint – Advanced Analysis

The trend to smaller calibers in magazine fed rifles is happening for a very good reason. For a .308 Winchester round, you only have 2.37 calibers of nose length available for the bullet to protrude from the case. Such a short nose will have relatively high drag for the caliber. By contrast, smaller calibers such as 6.5mm and 6mm have proportionally more length available for the nose to protrude from the case and still fit in the same COAL constraint. 65 130 AR Hybrid Cartridge ComparisonProportionally longer noses mean lower drag. Proportionally longer bullets mean higher sectional density. Combine an elevated sectional density with lower drag, and you get higher BC bullets. For example, consider a 175 grain .30 caliber bullet commonly used in .308 Winchester; M118LR type ammo. These 175 grain bullets have G7 BC’s in the neighborhood of .243 to .260. Neck the .308 down to 6.5mm (260 Remington) or 6mm (.243 Winchester) and now look at the BC’s of the bullets available in these calibers which work within the same magazine length constraint. The 6.5mm 130 grain AR Hybrid has a G7 BC of 0.290, and the 6mm 105 grain Hybrid has a G7 BC of 0.278; both of which are higher than the .30 cal 175 grain bullet. Furthermore, you get hundreds of feet per second more velocity with the necked down cartridges as well.

In Summary

The new Berger 6.5mm 130 grain AR Hybrid OTM Tactical bullet is specifically optimized for use in loaded ammo with COAL constraints for magazine feeding. This bullet maximizes overall performance through BC as well as achievable muzzle velocity in mid-capacity 6.5mm cartridges fed from AR length magazines.

Bob and EOL are building rifles that are capable of shooting extremely aggressive bullets, so Bryan and Berger Bullets have risen to the challenge of producing such a bullet. The 195gr EOL bullet has the highest ballistic performance of any 7mm bullet currently in existence, and is truly the first of its kind for a number of reasons.

The first thing to note about this bullet is that it breaks with the common trend-line for heavy bullets in a given caliber.  Typically, 180 grains is the heaviest weight available in 7mm.  This bullet adds 15 grains to that.

The additional weight is split between the bearing surface and longer nose.  Compared to the 7mm 180 grain Target Hybrid, the bearing surface is 0.096” longer, and the nose is 0.022” longer.  The 7 degree BT’s are about the same.

With a sectional density of 0.345 lb/in2, the ability of this bullet to slip through the air and impact game animals with more energy is off the charts.  By comparison, the Berger .30 caliber 210 grain Hunting VLD has a sectional density of 0.316 lb/in2.

The hybrid ogive ensures length tolerance and minimal drag by design, while the 7 degree boat tail minimizes base drag and provides favorable stability characteristics at transonic speed.

The actual form factor of the 7mm 195 grain Elite Hunter is among the lowest offered by any Berger Bullet, beating the G7 drag standard by 11%. Combined with the high sectional density, this bullet has a G7 BC of 0.387, which is 5% higher than the Berger .30 caliber 230 grain Target Hybrid!

Due to the extremely low drag profile of this bullet, the G1 BC varies a considerable amount across the velocity spectrum. Above 3000 fps, the bullet is flying with a G1 BC of 0.814. As it slows to 1500 fps, the G1 BC falls to 0.706, for an average of 0.754 from 3000 to 1500 fps.

This performance data is the result of live fire testing.

Stability requirements for this bullet are not as radical as you might think. In most conditions, a 1:8.3” twist is adequate for full stability. If you’re concerned about stability, a 1:8” twist would have you covered in any circumstance. Remember, slightly marginal stability can result in a couple percent reduction in BC, but the precision of the bullets will be unaffected until the stability factor (SG) drops below 1.1. Torture Testing and Survivability

This is a hunting bullet with a thin jacket which provides reliable expansion on impact down to 1800 fps. With the long bearing surface and high pressure magnums that we anticipate this bullet being fired from, questions about the bullets survivability were a concern.

To address concerns about survivability, we sent some samples to Kirby Allen; a well-known wildcatter who specializes in high volume, high velocity magnums: http://www.apsrifles.com/Home_Page.html

Kirby was kind enough to run this bullet through its paces in some of his rifles. Long story short, the 7mm 195 grain Elite Hunter survived being fired at over 3300 fps! The bullets were accurate and impacted targets at long range with dope predicted by the measured BC.

Though these tests were comprised of relatively short strings of fire (2-5 shots), we’re confident they will survive longer strings from more normal cartridges on longer strings of fire.

Terminal Performance: Results on game

Bob Beck (Extreme Outer Limits) has also been testing these bullets on game animals in the field. Bob reports:

“I have reached out today to Eric to let him know that we have made 3 kills and counting with the bullets. YES they perform well, extremely well to be exact. The subject were Llamas. They are hard to kill as a standard and the three shot were from 10 ft, 500 yards and 1046 yards. All bullets expanded and killed immediately. One of the shots was a frontal which flipped the animal over completely!”

Final Thoughts

We are excited about these bullets and confident that they will be successful. However, there are a couple of very important things to keep in mind. This bullet is currently being made ONLY in our Elite Hunter configuration.  It is made using our thinner jacket to produce the best possible terminal performance.  If the testing on these bullets is successful, then our plan is to also produce a Target version with a thicker jacket.  We know that many shooters are excited to try these bullets in target competitions. Our hunting bullets are held to the same tolerances as our target bullets, but do have a thinner jacket (read HERE for more information). They are not target bullets, which are built to withstand the speeds and pressures that our target shooters demand. So if you plan to use these in your target rifles, please test them thoroughly BEFORE you go to a major competition.

Update of Berger Bullets’ Performance Data

Berger Bullets has always been a leader in evolving the information provided to shooters, helping them make the most educated decisions regarding their bullet choice.  Once again, we are pioneering new advances in ballistic performance data.

Twist Rate Advancements

First, we made new advancements in the area of bullet stability and twist rates.  Modern long range bullets have benefits that cannot be fully realized with a single digit twist rate number, such as 1:12”.  There is a big gray area of marginal stability in which bullets can fly with good accuracy, but a depressed BC.  Recognizing this reality, Berger is now listing two twist rates for each bullet we produce.  The first is the minimum twist that we have always recommended, which is the minimum twist needed for good accuracy.  The second is the new optimal twist, which is the twist that will stabilize the bullet to a level which achieves its full performance (BC) potential.  For more information, read HERE.

BC Updates

Second, we have updated all of our Ballistic Coefficients to be even more accurate.  We have provided some additional information below to help you better understand the changes.

History

Prior to 2008, all of Berger Bullets’ BC’s were calculated using a computer prediction.  Early in 2009, we began measuring BC’s with live fire testing.  As a result, Berger’s BC’s were updated and G7 BC’s were also made available.  This represented a dramatic improvement in the accuracy of performance data at that time.  Since 2009, the BC’s assessed for Berger Bullets have not been updated.

As part of our ongoing effort to provide shooters with the best information possible, Berger has been testing every lot of bullets produced for the last several years.  The result is updated and highly accurate running averages of BC’s for recent production lots.

 

How and why would the BC of a bullet change?

Changes in BC are due to numerous factors, both deliberate and unavoidable.  One deliberate change that was made to many of the boat tails was to go from a 9 degree to a 7 degree angle, which decreases drag (and increases BC) by about 2%.  Other factors, such as manufacturing realities, have caused recent lots to be slightly different (higher or lower BC’s) than those tested over 5 years ago.  Finally, original tests were conducted on single lots, so possible testing inaccuracies may have occurred.  These days, the live fire testing is done in a more controlled environment.  Testing of subsequent lots is highly repeatable.  This update captures all those changes that have taken place and brings the advertised performance of Berger Bullets up to date.

Some bullets have had many lots made in the last few years, and so the updated BC’s are comprised of many lots; whereas some of the less popular bullets have their updated values based on fewer recent samples.

 

How much have the BC’s changed and what does it mean to me?

Typically the change in BC is within +/-2% from the original values, but there are a few that have changed by more than +/-5%.

These may seem like small changes, and they are by common standards.  Berger Bullets has built a reputation for exceeding the common standards and providing the precision shooter with a higher level of information than what is commonly available.

For example, look at the 30 caliber 185 grain VLD Hunting bullet.  The G7 BC of this bullet was updated from 0.281 to 0.286, a +2% change.  If you’re using this bullet in hunting scenarios within a couple hundred yards, a 2% change in BC is meaningless to you.  However, suppose you’re using this bullet for long range hunting, like many Berger customers.  When predicting the drop for a long range shot, a 2% error in the bullet’s BC translates to a miscalculation in drop of 4” at 1000 yards.  Considering that the vital area of your target may only be 8” to 10”, the 4” error in drop can be very important!

 

There are many challenging and uncertain variables that long range shooters need to overcome related to hitting small targets at great distances.  When you shoot Berger, you can trust that your bullet information is accurate and worry about the rest of the puzzle.

 

 

smal boxThe table below shows a listing of the newly assessed BC’s, and the percentage change from the previous values*.  The Berger website (including the product information page, the quick reference sheet, ballistic calculator and stability calculator) has been updated with this information.  All new lots of bullets will be packaged in new labels containing this information as well.

Lastly, we have added the G7 form factor to our Quick Reference Sheet. The analysis of form factors can be very useful when considering a bullet’s long range performance potential.  Going by BC alone can be deceptive since BC includes the weight and caliber of the bullet. Form factor indicates how much drag the bullet has, which is a very important consideration for all bullets of all calibers.  To read more about the G7 form factor click HERE.

Berger Bullets Twist Rate Recommendations by Eric Stecker & Bryan Litz

At Berger Bullets, enhancing the rifle shooting experience is our primary objective and founding ideal.  Keeping our eyes constantly on this prize impacts every aspect of our operation.  Our goal is to establish the most accurate and up-to-date information possible, so trajectory predictions while using Berger Bullets are the most precise performance estimates available.  This data will be constantly reviewed and refined annually to maintain the accuracy of this information.

Recently, we announced an update to our ballistic coefficient (BC), reference dimensions and twist rate recommendations data.  The update to the BC and reference dimensions data is the result of years of testing all the bullets we’ve produced from each lot. The update to the twist rate data was a bit more complicated.  We believed that telling a shooter that the 1:10” barrel they’ve been using for years doesn’t work for the bullets they’ve been shooting was going to cause significant confusion and dissatisfaction.  To resolve this concern, we had decided to offer two twist rate recommendations.  We would offer a Minimum Twist recommendation which allows a bullet to make round holes in targets, but is not fully stable.  We would also offer an Optimized Twist recommendation down to the 0.1” so that each shooter knows what twist rate they needed to achieve their level of desired performance.

It sounded like a great plan at the time.  Turns out, we were wrong.  Launching our twist rates in this way has served to provide far more confusion than solutions.  The complexity of stability and how it works at different environments is something that can’t be communicated in a few short words and a couple of numbers that suggest two different outcomes.  It was clear that we needed to revisit this situation, and fast.

Understanding twist requirements is an important consideration in bullet selection.  Unfortunately, there can be a great deal of gray area in the calculation of stability since it’s affected by atmospherics and muzzle velocity.  The best way to determine accurate stability requirements for your bullet is to use the Berger Bullets Stability Calculator.  This calculator is the best resource for determining twist requirements.

In addition to the stability calculator, Berger also offers basic twist recommendations that are based on achieving optimal stability in nominal conditions.  This is the twist rate that appears on bullet box labels and brochures.  Since stability requirements are so dependent on individual conditions, it’s difficult to provide a one size fits all twist rate for every scenario; so with any single twist recommendation, certain assumptions need to be made. This article describes Berger Bullets’ policy for arriving at recommended Optimal Twist Rates.

Consider the following:

  • In order for a bullet to fly with its highest BC possible, the stability factor needs to be 1.5 or higher.
  • Bullets can fly with optimal precision with stability factors less than 1.5, but BC will be somewhat degraded.

Regardless what twist rates are recommended, they’re based on assumptions.  Berger’s recommended twist rates are based on achieving optimal performance in nominal conditions.  This means that the twist rates may appear somewhat conservative.  In other words, the Berger recommended twist rates may be faster than what you actually need in your environment.

One other thing to understand about the Berger optimal twist rates is that since they’re based on achieving optimal stability and performance, you can use slower twist rates and achieve good accuracy, although you may not be getting all the BC out of them.

In addition to basing the twist requirements on full stability, the twist rates are also rounded down to the nearest whole number.

For example, consider that for a 6mm 105 grain Hybrid, you need a 1:7.8” twist for optimal performance in standard conditions.  Many people have success with this bullet in 1:8” twist because a common application involves high velocity and summer conditions above sea level in which a 1:8” twist actually produces an SG equal or greater than 1.5.  Due to Berger’s policy of rounding down to the next fastest twist rate from the optimal 1:7.8”, Berger arrives at a recommended optimal of 1:7”.  This is an example of how Berger’s policy for recommending optimal twist rates for all conditions may result in a highly conservative result.

Introducing: The Berger 270 caliber 170 grain EOL Elite Hunter

Berger’s latest addition to the hunting line is another design inspired by Extreme Outer Limits (EOL); the 270 caliber 170 grain EOL Elite Hunter.

This bullet is designed for maximum external and terminal ballistic performance in 270 caliber rifles that  have twist rates faster than the traditional 1:10”.

Nearly all rifles chambered for 270 caliber are fitted with 1:10” twist barrels.  This relatively slow twist limits the length, weight and BC of bullets that can be stabilized.  Typically, the heaviest 270 bullets are around 150 grains because that is all that can be stabilized in a 1:10” twist. However, if a faster twist barrel is used for a 270 rifle, it can stabilize a much longer, heavier and higher BC bullet.

The newly designed 170 grain EOL Elite Hunter from Berger has a higher Sectional Density (SD) and Ballistic Coefficient (BC) than any other 270 hunting bullet in existence. 

The Hybrid design blends the best aspects of the tangent and secant ogives.  It starts at the bearing surface with a tangent section that will align itself more effectively when the bullet contacts the rifling.  Beyond this section the shape transitions into a secant section which is proven to be to more effective in the wind. The result is a high BC bullet that is easy to tune.

The high BC allows the bullet to retain velocity better downrange which means less drop, less wind drift, and a higher velocity impact with the target.  The high SD gives the bullet enormous penetration potential on medium and big game animals.

These bullets are made with the longest possible Hybrid ogive.  The long nose produces the highest possible BC, but does not comply with the limitations of SAAMI and CIP COAL standards.  This bullet is deliberately intended for hunters who use custom rifles and either have extended length magazines or single feed their ammo.

It’s very important to understand the stability requirements of this new bullet.  Most 270 rifles do not have a fast enough twist barrel.  For full stability, Berger recommends a 1:8” twist or faster.

The Extreme Outer Limits MOA line of rifles are made with faster-than-conventional twist rates to stabilize such long, high performance bullets.  The 270 caliber MOA rifle comes with a 1:8.5” twist which is plenty of twist to stabilize the new Berger 170 grain EOL Elite Hunter in all conditions.

Final Thoughts

Although this new high BC, heavy-for-caliber bullet is great for long range, it’s also an excellent option for hunting at any range.  The high sectional density of heavy-for-caliber bullets promotes greater penetration than lighter, faster bullets.  If you’ve been considering the 270 for larger game and are concerned about the penetration potential of conventional options, this bullet is the answer.

We take great pride and delight in relaying the news that Berger has successfully proven a significant increase in the amount of match grade quality bullets we can produce.  After implementing the solution to our jacket making process in March of 2016, we are averaging nearly two times our record jacket output.  The best news is that these jackets meet and beat our industry leading .0003 TIR wall uniformity tolerance.  Additionally, as an unexpected side benefit, they are also exceeding our expectations in bullet forming performance.

We’ve been working very hard on a key challenge at Berger.  The challenge is in reducing the excessive time it takes to set up the jacket making press to achieve the .0003 or better TIR wall thickness uniformity that is required.   A set up that should take between 3 to 5 days frequently stretched into several weeks.  And far too frequently, set ups that took weeks ran into months.

This reality had a tremendous negative impact on our ability to make enough bullets.  It also made it impossible for us to establish a dependable production schedule.  We recognize that many who enjoy the higher quality Berger provides are willing to wait but they can’t wait forever especially lacking a reasonably accurate notion of how long.  Our shooters are understandably compelled to create loads with other brands since it is better to shoot anything than it is to not shoot at all regardless of which brand is being used.

The good news is that those who have been frustrated by the lack of availability of Berger Bullets will see that we’ve solved this problem in a big way. I am thrilled to relay that we are two months into a jacket production output rate that is nearly two times our highest output rate to date and, of course, the jacket quality is the same (and in some ways better).  It is clear now that we’ve identified and resolved the bottleneck in our ability to consistently produce .0003 TIR jackets.

This is not to suggest that many things were going poorly, but as a result of us being empowered with these impactful tools, we see now how we can use them to explore important things in new and enhanced ways. Getting stronger with using these tools means nothing but good things for our shooters, their results and the rifle shooting experience.

I regard these and other soon to be announced changes to Berger as being as impactful to the rifle shooting experience as the day Walt turned his first jacket to achieve .0003 TIR over half a century ago.  Shooters will see for themselves that our bullets are more readily available and will continue to be in far greater numbers.  This marks the dawning of a new age for Berger and for those who shoot our bullets.  We didn’t change everything; we are making what was already great even better, genuinely.

Geoff Esterline joins the Berger Bullets team

We are excited to announce that Geoff Esterline will be joining the Berger Bullets team as our Director of Sales and Marketing. Geoff worked for Sinclair International as their Sales Manager, which was Berger Bullets first dealer/reseller account. As Sales Manager, he managed print media, catalog and e-commerce sales channels, and supplier relations. From there, Geoff transitioned to Brownells, Inc., another trusted Berger Bullets supplier. As Product Category Manager with Brownells, Geoff managed the product life cycle for Reloading, Ammunition and Optics categories. Berger Bullets has exciting plans heading into the future, and with Geoff’s industry knowledge, he will be an integral part in the process.

ABM launches a new 300 Win Mag Mission Ready round loaded with the Berger 215gr Hybrid Target Bullet

ABM Ammo has announced the release of the 300 Winchester Magnum 215gr Hybrid Target Mission Ready round. This round is loaded with the Berger 30 Caliber 215gr Hybrid Target bullet for maximum BC. The hybrid ogive profile of this bullet was developed by our Chief Ballistician, Bryan Litz. This unique ogive profile combines the streamlined design of a secant ogive with a traditional tangent ogive. The 215gr is an exciting design for ammunition manufacturers like ABM Ammo, as it allows them to load a high BC bullet into factory ammunition that shoots well out of various rifle platforms with a 1:9” twist rate or faster.

Bryan developed this round loaded to a 3.600” approximate COAL. The ammunition’s length limits the amount of magazines it is able to feed through, however this allows much higher velocities than otherwise possible. When pushed out of a 300 Winchester Magnum cartridge, it is capable of getting 2886 fps muzzle velocity out of ABM’s lab rifle, which is 86 fps faster than the 230gr load out of the same rifle. This trade off makes the two loads very comparable when shooting at extended range distances. This round has undergone extensive testing by highly capable shooters and has proven its worth out of multiple platforms.

In preparation for the release of this round, ABM Ammo partnered with LongRangeOnly.com for extensive field testing.

“What can I say bad about this ammo? It’s passed every one of the tests above my expectations,” says Long Range Only Editor, Jeff Brozovich.

Jeff did the initial testing and got some great results from this ammunition. He took this round through the gauntlet of testing by weighing it, measuring it, and he also did some short range and long range shooting with it. He is a seasoned handloader and while measuring the seating depth of this loaded ammunition he stated he was very impressed and it was “as close as I could probably load them.”
